Abstract

At the beginning of the sixteenth century, Europe witnessed major intellectual and religious transformations that led to the emergence of the religious reform movement, which shook the authority of the Catholic Church and established new foundations for religious and political thought. At the heart of these transformations, university institutions emerged as centers for spreading ideas and exchanging knowledge where Cambridge University played a prominent role in this context, as the university represented a fertile environment for theological and intellectual debates, and contributed to the formation of a generation of scholars and reformers who took upon themselves the task of criticizing church practices and calling for a comprehensive religious reform. The intellectual circles affiliated with Cambridge University formed a link between the rising humanist movements and the new reformative thought, making it one of the most prominent institutions that paved the way for the emergence of new religious ideas in England and Europe.
